Apply the filter, please

Cydnee Cochran

A friend who is an occupational therapist works with children who are on the autism spectrum. One of the things she teaches them is to think in terms of “thought” bubbles and “word” bubbles, just like they would see in a cartoon. “Apply the filter,” she says, meaning, stop and think about the impact and effect of your words before you say them.

This technique is not just for children who are struggling to improve their social interaction skills. The same principles apply in public relations. We counsel our clients to think strategically through the following points before their words shift from thought bubble to word bubble, whether written or spoken:

  • Consider the message. What are you trying to communicate? thought (Cydnee's 2-18-09 post)
  • Consider the audience. Who are you trying to reach with this message?
  • Consider the delivery. How are you going to say or write it?

word (Cydnee's 2-18-09 post) The goal of “applying the filter” for the children my friend teaches is to help them respond appropriately to people and situations around them. For communicators, the goal is to be truthful and transparent while the same time being mindful of the message and how it is delivered.

A Smooth Business

Inta Juice's business of the week - MCG
Meredith, Inta Juice owner and Allison celebrate MCG’s distinguished honor of business of the week presented in these trophy cups by Inta Juice.

A new business in town, Inta Juice, named us its first business of the week, which meant we got smoothies for everyone in the office this Thursday. I had the “watermelon wave,” and it was a nice energy boost for a busy afternoon. In a world where being aggressive toward business can make or break you, and in an economy where the unemployment rate is continuously rising, making a public relations agency your first business of the week is incredibly smart if you ask me. Communication and sharing knowledge with the public are both foundations to public relations, and it looks like people in our community are realizing that.  It also helps that the smoothies were delicious.
